An all day Cadwork lesson today. Using more of the commands and getting more familiar with it's abilities. Some people have a little more luck drafting with it than others. The computers were threatened with violence sometimes!
Still more Cadwork today. Instead of drawing in the two dimensional plane, we were drawing in the three dimensional plane. The structure looks much better this way and it is easy to move components around. As a beginner they don't always stay where you want them to.
Today we created contour type elements, shop drawings, timber lists and dimensioned our drawings. In the end all this data can be input to an automated machine. Video examples can be seen here, courtesy of Krüsi of Switzerland. http://www.krusi.com/KrusimaticVideos.html very cool!
Today the class completed the 4 sill timbers of our project. Used the 16" circular saw and the chain mortiser. Mortiser works fast to cut the holes for the corner posts. Still a little touch up work is needed with hand tools to get a good fit. The post to sill connection is not subjected to critical forces so the joinery will be kept simple. A tongue and fork type joint is used at the corners with a hole to slip in the tenon of the post. This will hold the corners in place.
Completed corner sill into which an upright post will go to lock the assembly in place.
It was a long day today. Started off with some theory in the class this morning. In the shop we continued working on the sill frame. We marked the mortise and tenon connections for the floor joists and got a good start on cutting some of them. Two joists will have a shouldered dovetail connection which will be good cutting practice.
Picture sequence of cutting the joinery for our sill connection.
Getting a good start on the project. Shouldered dovetail tenon detail. (right)
This is a brace detail for our timber frame cabin. Below is the completed version being held up by Tom, or the other way around...
