*trivia* In 1895, Wilhelm Emil Fein builds the world's first electric hand drill. This ancestor of FEIN's modern day power tools is considered the first power tool in the history of technology.
In the afternoon we were back at the shop getting the last of the horses together. Some fine tuning was still required on some of the joinery to make everything fit just right. There's always the big hammer…

A Building Inspector was in the class in the morning giving us an outline of the permit process. We also covered various cost estimating methods for projects.
The last of the sawhorse projects are coming together. An army of horses is then assembled.
In the evening we had an info session on the Cadworks software used for planning, 3D design & production of structures.
Starting the Cadworks CAD program next week. In the meantime drew up the next project the old fashioned way, with a pencil & eraser... lots of eraser! Our assignment is to cut and assemble the frame. We will be using different types of joinery throughout. Looking forward to it.
Some sample screenshots of frame components using Cadworks software. Click on the images to see more from their site.
The first 2 dimensional drawings I drew with Dietrich's 2D which is available for free from the Dietrich's site. The three dimensional rendering is done with Dietrich's 3D CAD/CAM for Timber Framing.
Re visited layout of braces that are not 45 degrees and covered the math behind constructing stairs. Discussion of heating systems such as masonry, stone, floor and geothermal as well as timber frame enclosure systems. Various methods and benefits/pitfalls to using standard walls or using SIP's. (Structural Insulated panels)

Busy day today. Snow and ice removal, dig timbers out from the snow, wash logs, mill some of the seasoned timbers into usable material and also start on milling some of the logs. Lots of preparation for our next timber frame project.
A couple of samples of the joinery that will be used in our cabin.
Lots of prep before we start...
